Chapter IV Fights Hunger Globally & Locally
BIRMINGHAM CROP HUNGER WALK

n ALCA Chapter IV is currently forming a team for the upcoming third annual 5K Birmingham CROP Hunger Walk on Sunday, April 13 on Southside in Rushton Park.  Registration begins at 1:45.  The walk begins at 2:30.

CROP means Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty.  This is an excellent community service opportunity and a worthwhile cause!

On Sunday, April 13, 2008, Birmingham joins thousands of communities around the country in the CROP Walk for Hunger Relief. CROP Walks raise money for local and world hunger as well as disasters throughout the United States like Hurricane Katrina.

Funds raised by the 5 kilometer walk through Birmingham's beautiful Southside Neighborhood will support the local hunger and poverty programs of Greater Birmingham Ministries as well as the national and international programs of Church World Service.

Church World Service, one of the oldest and largest ecumenical relief and development organizations, works in 80 countries supporting relief efforts such as refugees in Sudan, famine victims in Niger, tsunami victims in Indonesia, and schools, health clinics, agricultural assistance in the world's poorest communities.

Church World Service is also one of the first relief organizations called in by FEMA whenever there is a federal disaster. So far, CWS has assisted evacuees in shelters with approximately 30,000 blankets, 40,000 health kits and school kits, and medicine boxes able to assist 20,000 people for 3 months. With a focus on the most vulnerable survivors (poor families, disabled persons, elderly victims, children), CWS has issued an appeal for 9.5 million dollars and is planning long term recovery and rebuilding assistance to communities in hurricane affected areas.

CROP Walks are family events and everyone is encouraged to join in.  All faiths, all schools, civic groups, and businesses are invited to participate.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

n Chapter IV Adopts Community Service Project

This year, Chapter IV officers decided that Chapter IV will participate in a community service project as part of our year’s goals.  We have chosen to assist the SafeHouse of Shelby County.  As most of you know, they help women and children who are escaping domestic violence.  Their major service area is Hoover and Clay, Coosa and Shelby counties, but they do accept clients from other areas in times of crisis.  During their last fiscal year, SafeHouse sheltered 191 people, responded to 1,330 hotline calls, provided 195 outreach services, 57 child advocacy services, 1,060 group counseling hours and more than 500 individual counseling hours.  This is an excellent organization!  Since I worked in Shelby County for many years, I had opportunities to observe this caring assistance to families in crisis (as many of you do, too).

According to Phylis Simmons, Volunteer Coordinator, SafeHouse is moving into a new facility in early 2007 and have many needs to fulfill – mostly in the area of supplying linens for rooms/baths and serviceable china and silverware for the kitchen and dining areas.  Another continuing need is individual welcoming packets for clients.  Most leave home quickly without having a chance to pack bags, so they are grateful for toiletries and other individual needs of daily living.

At the Chapter IV meeting/reception at Fall Conference, we will have a basket available to accept monetary contributions and/or donations for the welcome packets.  Ideas include: hairbrushes, toothbrushes, toothpaste, deodorant, lotions, socks, underwear, sweatsuits, diapers, journals and pens PLUS any other items that you can think of to make these women and children more comfortable.  As you are buying your supplies to take to Mobile, please buy extras to donate!!  If we get enough money, we could adopt a room in the new house!

If you wish to have more information about this worthwhile project, email me at childressj@charter.net.  Please visit their website at www.safehouse.org.
